Stratum:   50% total inclusions: 10% pottery, 10% tile, 20% pebbles to cobbles (fine to coarse pebbles, rounded to angular, spherical to platy), 10% boulders
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   This is the third stratum of the 1960s excavation martyr which we are removing in order to better understand the walls and the room which the martyr occupies as well as preparing for the removal of walls 5490 and 5485. Panos began the first pass in the west and is moving east. At the west end there is a harder area under this first pass with more clayey bits in it. And along the southern edge of the martyr (the edge of the bothroi) the soil gets softer, but this is along the same line as the division between 5502 and 5526, which could be caused by errosion into the bothroi or could be a geniune context division. Panos will finish this pass and we will then assess what to do about these possibe different contexts. Once the stratum was cleared, it was clear that this soft and hard patches were consistent throughout the next stratum, thus we will dig it as one context. But before this, a patch of dark brown soil without so many boulders in it was revealed in the NE corner of the martyr. This we think is a cut in the next stratum of the martyr, therefore, we will remove it before continuing with the rest of the martyr.
When Panos cleared out our supposed cut in the martyr it was clear that the "cut" was another stratum of the martyr which continued under what we've called the "next stratum" above. Because of this we are digging the "next stratum", with all its hard and soft patches (the soft areas are of the same soil type as described on the other side; the hard areas are light reddish brown, sandier than the softer soil and more compact), as a continuation of stratum III (5538). The cleaner, dark brown soil will be stratum IV. The second pass Panos began from east to west. In roughly the center of the martyr was revealed a large block of gypsum (0.17m x 0.26m x 0.15m) and another of green schist (0.15m x 0.24m x 0.05m).
In the west under the second pass was revealed a layer of tile, just above where a floor was located when we cleared the north face of the martyr (5523). This layer of tile is probably a destruction level of a collapsed roof. We will remove these tiles as a new context in the martyr and save them to see if we can reassemble the tiles; by doing this we will be able to confirm that this layer of tile is a roof collapse. What remained of 5544 (that of which went under 5538) was taken with 5538 as both were over the layer of tile. The tile layer has been found under the majority of the martyr and could have covered the whole floor of this room.
