Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven down to the S. The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is weakly cemented. The soil is well sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   The space of approximately 4.0 m L and 2.0 m W between walls 5 and 6 was at levels that C.K. Williams exposed in the 1960s excavations of this area. What is visible is some hardened fill, probably the result of repeated exposure over time since its exposure in 1960s excavations, surrounding and partly overlying a deposit of cobble-sized rubble. The cobbles follow the line of E-W wall 5, and almost certainly relate to its construction-- walls, in turn, may relate to the construction of a later E-W wall that would have placed larger blocks atop these smaller-stoned foundations.
The lines of the cobbles appear much more well-placed than they did prior to exposure, which is one reason that this hypothesis now sems more tenable. No cut for a foundation trench has yet been noted, however, so it is worth going back to Williams's records to see if he ever found one. It WAS suggested by the pickman that he had located on on the N side of Wall 5, and that was well above the level where the cobbles currently rest. On the other hand, G.S. has pointed out that this wall foundation may have completely filled its foundation trench, and that consequently there would be no loose soil visible on either side of the cobbles anyway, save some possibly due to root action.
