Description:   The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is coarse sand.
Notes:   Excavated by Jess Paga, 22.4.10
We are dismantling NS wall 5561 because it does not have more than two courses preserved and only has a length of about 1.20 m. currently extant. The wall has been drawn and photographed. We hope that by removing this wall, we will better understand the strata we have been digging directly to the East. The wall itself is composed of unworked and roughly hewn stones without a bonding agent. The soil matrix within the wall is dark greyish brown (the grey hue is probably due to the ash deposits discovered along its Eastern face -- see context 6805). The soil has ca. 20% inclusions of small rocks, some pottery and tile, tree roots, some lenses of charcoal and calcium carbonate.
After we removed wall 5561, a few additional stones were revealed, possibly related to the stone feature to the East, uncovered during the excavation of context 6797 (possibly a Western extension of EW wall 6764). The soil uncovered has some ash lenses and is loose in compaction. A compact martry was left on the Western edge, associated with the pit directly to the East (= 5595).
