| Description: | Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt. | |
| Notes: | This cleaning context was taken in order to determine whether the cut found at the bottom of 5556 is a continuation of a cut we found upon digging 5541. The corner between the two wall 5561 and 5562 was exposed surface from the 1960s excavations. As we dug, the W edge of the pit was clear. However, the edge of the cut in the SE corner was not clear. We had to continue digging down in order to find it. Upon final cleaning of the area, an inscription fragment was found sticking out of the SW corner of the square martyr. It was written in Latin. This pit will now be dug in a separate context. The SE corner of the cut was difficult to find because it appears that another pit (filled with ash) was cut into it on the furthest SE side and goes under Wall 5561. As this wall cannot be removed at this time, and the deposit is very small, we decided to move on to the larger pit (5567) | |
