Title:   Fill of large pit
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1101
Context:   5567

Date:   2008/05/20
Lot:   Lot 2008-081
Stratum:   15% incl: roof tile, pottery, bone, and mixed cobbles, few mixed boulders, little ash
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   After the discovery of the pit cut edge in 5541 (the W), 5563 (the S), and 5556 (the N and E), we are excavating the fill of this cut. This pit cut was found under so many mulitple other contexts because of the way the 1960s excavation's left their martyrs. The elevation of the cut revealed under 5556 is 84.60 while the cut revealed under 5541 was 84.27. The 1960s excavations had cut off the W and S surfaces through which the pit was cut.
The pit fill has destruction debris as well as bones but is surprisingly clean. The percentage of inclusions is rather low and the percentage of soil in this deposit's matrix is high.
At c. 0.65 m down from the S elevation, another cut was discovered. The fill inside this cut (therefore below this fill) is undistinguishable from this fill. Only the S part of this cut has been discovered so far…
The cut has been further revealed - it more or less follows the original line of the cut to the W, and sticks out c. 0.35 m from the original cut in the S. This second cut continues under the scarps created in the N and E. Part of a large rectangular stone shows through the scarp in the S - possibly related to Wall 5562 above?? Or perhaps to the earlier wall under 5562, revealed to the W???
Two context sheets entered. This is the decsription of the second context sheet, after it was erased from the computer and all the information consolidated in this context sheet (ITH, April 3, 2009):
"After the discovery of a pit cut edges in 5541, 5563, and under 5556, we are excavating the fill for this cut. The revelation of this pit cut was in phases due to the 1960's baulk on the western part of the cut having completely removed the upper floor in which the pit was cut into. More specifically, the elevation of the cut revealed under 5556 is 84.60 while the cut uncovered by the removal of 5541 is 84.27. The 1960's excavation has also cut through the upper floor in which the pit was cut into in the south.
The pit fill is surprisingly clean. The percentage of inclusions has been estimated at 20% which appears low for a fill context. The most notable inclusion is roof tile numbering 158 fragments weighting 37kg.
At around .65m down from the south elevation, another cut was discovered. The fill inside this cut (therefore below this fill) is noticeably darker and greyer, with much more ash. Only the southern part of this cut has been discovered so far.
The cut has been further revealed--it more or less follows the original line of the cut to the west, and sticks out around .35m from the original cut in the south. This second cut to the west continous under the scarps created in the north and east. Part of a large rectangular stone shows through the scarp in the south--possibly related to wall 5562."
