Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   This appears to be a tile destruction level on top of a floor. We are excavating it to find out more about the possible destruction. Our pickman Panos is absent today and did not finish clearing 5538; there is still a small area in the corner between walls 5483 and 5484. We decided to start removing the tile layer in his absence, but only to the middle of wall 5483 in order not to be contaminated by 5538. We saved all tile to be weighed and counted, and we attempted to find joins between broken tiles in order to reconstruct whole tiles. Unfortunately, not many could be rejoined (only two cover tiles were able to be reconstructed in their full width but not length). As a result of this and based on the fact that there was very little fill and few other types of inclusions (not tile), we have preliminarily hypothesized that this is a redeposition; that this is a layer of tile fill put down over a floor with dirt fill placed over it to raise the level of the room. We will know more conclusively once we have finished excavating the layer.
We did eventually finish removing the remains of 5538 and then 5568 with the help of Kostas as our temporary pickman. Once complete, it is clear that this layer is redeposited and no collapse.
For this layer, 5568, we removed 6 buckets and one box of tile. The tile count came to 1015 pieces and it weighed 144.20kg.
