Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the E. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   This thin layer of soil was beneath the redeposited tile layer, 5568, and on top of what appears to be a floor of compact dirt, partialy exposed in the northeast corner of the room. There are still a few bits of tile embedded in this layer. We are removing this as a separate context from the tile layer (5568) because the tile of 5568 popped off easily, whereas the only remaining tile is firmly embedded in this layer (5588). Our goal in excavating this layer is to expose the floor. It is difficult to tell the boundary between this layer (5588) and the floor because both have dried out. At the bottom of this context was revealed an ashy layer cutting the floor and cut by the bothroi excavated in the 1960s. Also revealed was the possible tops of two very narrow (< 0.10m) foundation trenchs for walls 5519 and 5483, the foundation trenches cut the floor.
