Category:   Deposit

Context:   5620

Date:   2008/05/24
Stratum:   15%: large chunks of clay (0.05-0.07 m L); numerous tiles; medium rounded pebbles, few ceramics
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the W. The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is weakly cemented. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy clay.
Notes:   If not for the clay pockets and large clay stripe defining this stratum of fill, it would be deemed to be the same as overlying context 5579. It has become clear that we are to understand this level as fill dumped above a previous surface. Since light-colored clay was used frequently in Frankish construction, it is not difficult to imagine it dumped in concert with other construction materials, such as tile. The hard skin that distinguished 5615 and 5520 as separate contexts could be due to remnants of the white plaster that coated pit cut 5498 and the surrounding firm surface into which it was cut, or may be due to hardening and weathering from the sun.
Regardless, it appeared that once the debris fill characteristic of other contexts excavated this week (5586, 5589, 5579, 5598) was removed from context 5620, there was a hard, flat surface exposed. The pickman removed the remainder of fill left after excavation 5615 after he realized that they were the same matrix of soil with subtle surface variations. This pass exposed the W and SW edges of the well head, and the N edge of foundations 5604 for the Wall 5603.
