Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is cemented. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty clay.
Notes:   This context was revealed after the excavtion of context 5603 just above E-W running wall 5604. The context was marked out as a uniformly hard rectangle of earth projecting out from N-S running Wall 4, parallel to 5604. The pickman singled it out based on its color and compation.
When the context 5623 ws excavated, the pickman had decided that the rectangle represented a layer of hardened fill, and that it matched another rectangle-shaped section overlying cobbles of the E-W wall 5604 to the N. Thus, both were taken in the removal of this context.
In the process of removing the context, the pickman uncovered the same thing that has appeared elsewhere around elevation 85.00-- flat-lying tiles and sporadic cobbles resting in a silty fill. This seems likely to correspond to the upper layer of tiled fill removed in contexts 5586, 5589, 5615, and 5620. Because the change was so diffuse between those contexts and what preceded them (i.e., 5579 and 5580), we decided to continue through that first layer of tiled fill. Consequently, the removal of this context was done in a large, single pass rather than two smaller passes, as had been done in the E area around the well.
At the very end of the context, a number of E-W running stones were uncovered projecting ca. 1.0 m from western N-S running wall 4. They appear to be part of a wall, because multiple courses are visible and they form a face. As more of those are uncovered, it will become clearer how this wall relates to its southern E-W running neighbors (Walls 5603 and Wall 6).
This context does not seem to be directly comparable to any of the other contexts previously excavated and appeara to represent a unique filling event, but it is closest in composition, perhaps, to clay level 5516, which neighbored 5623 to the E. Perhaps the difference is due to the fact that the rectangle covered the new E-W running wall section.
Examining the S-facing profile of the newly-exposed fill layer, a firm, defined edge with stone impressions appears visible. This must be the stratum against which the stones of Wall 5603 were set- meaning that the newly-exposed stratum exposed at the end of 5623 may represent the fill cut by 5603's foundation trench. Whether it also represents the cut for a foundation trench for 5604 (cobble foundations) remains to be seen, but it seems likely.
Addendum, 27.05.08:The E-W running wall has been further exposed by excavation of contexts 5627, 5604, and 5644, and what has been noted is that it definitely binds with Wall 4 running N-S to the W; this makes their construction contemporary and means that the new wall almost definitely predates foundations 5604. On the topic of the wall foundations 5604, G.S. has speculated that they cut a surface or fill at a much higher level than that at which they currently survive-- perhaps as high as 86.00-86.50 MASL. This would mean that the cut that we see as the edge of a foundation trench for 5604 is not the full extent of the cut, and that we never had the chance to see it, since the foundations have been exposed from the start.
