Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the W. The soil color is dark brownish black. The soil compaction is soft. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   Deposit 5651 is the fill of a drain lined with cobbles and tile fragments that extends from the east side of the cut for well 2 westward under wall 5649. The north and south boundaries of this deposit are formed by the stones that line the drainage channel. The first pass included both the deposits revealed by the removal of the fill of the cut above the stones, though the soil directly below deposit 5646 was a bit darker and softer than that below 5289. This is interpreted as the latter drying out in the several weeks since it was last excavated. After the first pass, it can be clearly seen that there is a color change from west to east within the fill of the channel, but the matrix is the same clayey silt. The color change, which has a very diffuse boundary, is attributed to the charcoal inclusions that are more concentrated in the west end of the drain. The second pass has revealed a second row of stones lining the drain and shows the walls of the drain to be vertical. The fill is now more compact than the first pass and the soil is more clayey. Coin found in third pass. The bottom of the drain is formed by a harder layer of earth with some pebbles and the tile fragments which seem to go under the stones that line the drain into the scarp.
