| Description: | Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt. | |
| Notes: | We are excavating this context in order to determine if 5706 is the fill of a foundation trench or a robbing trench. We think it may be a foundation trench on account of the dumped fill of roof tiles and cobbles to the east of 5706 abruptly stops about .60m from wall 5677. There is the possibility that we will come down on a floor-like surface which is visible in the northern scarp. If this floor-like structure is revealed, we will have to reinterpret this context and perhaps call it a robbing trench. This context is most likely a foundation trench. The bottom elevation is created by a marble tile floor which abuts wall 5677. This marble tile floor (5710) was also revealed with the removal of 20th century backfill (5652). The portion of the marble floor revealed by 5706 also abuts wall 5678 in the southern part of the context. The tiles have a maximum length of .30m and three are visible. | |
