Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   We are excavating this fill of pit 5758 to understand what relationship, if any, this pit has to the floors it cuts and if the contents of pit fill 5752 suggest how this area was used in antiquity.
As the fill was being removed, Guy Sanders identified some of the pottery as Frankish. Since pit 5758 is very close to the edge of 20th century excavations, it is most likely that we missed this later deposit die to its proximity to the northern scarp facing the south Stoa. Also, there is the question of the date of the floor that pit 5758 appears to cut into. It is possible that we are not looking at the original surface of the top cut. It may have been eroded away due to exposure.
The contents of the fill suggest a generalized rubbish deposit. The presence of complete and near complete animal bones along with a few elements that articulate suggest primary deposition. What makes us think it is not a kitchen deposit si the fact that roof tile fragments appear in the fill. In other words, a mixed trash pit. The weathering evident on the bone surfaces reflects the position of the pit close to the 20th century scarp and the result of modern vegetation and run off.
The removal of 5752 revealed a N-S oriented wall. It appears that those who dug the pit stopped when they came down on it.
