Date:   2008/06/03
Stratum:   20% total inclusions; 10% tile, 5% fine-medium pebbles, rounded-angular, spherical, 5% pottery, minimal bone
Description:   The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We opened this basket because we expect this whole vessel to be in a cut but whe don't know where the cut is. We can see a layer of ash in the cross section of the pit and are taking the ash layer to be the bottom level of our fill. We dug down to the ash layer and stopped, taking the edges of the ash layer as the boundaries of our context. The vessel is in fact intact, nearly complete (missing the rim and part of the neck) inv. # . We also revealed a large piece of a cooking vessel (handle, some of the rim, and some of the body; not a complete profile): inv. # . Excavation of this context left a shallow depression with ash at the bottom. We are not taking out a cut number because if there was a cut, we do not know where the boundaries are. We hypothosize that this fill and the ashy layer below (5761) were deposited deliberately to bury the whole vessel. We will excavate the ashy layer (5761) next.
Inv. # whole vessel:
top: 274.24, 1023.68, 84.57 bottom: 274.31, 1023.63, 84.44
inv. # partial vessel:
top: 274.20, 1023.50, 84.54 bottom: 274.28, 1023.55, 84.45
Revised 4.6.08 ACF: The fill of this pit was partially removed with previous layer 5749. The original pit fill would have covered the whole vessel, if our interpretation is correct that the pit was dug deliberately to bury the vessel. This pit would have cut layer 5749.
