Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the SW. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Deposit 5823 is a floor in Quadrant B of the courtyard that slumps down toward wall 5741. It is a surface full of small pebbles and pieces of pottery. The removal of 5823 is revealing the southern edge of the stones lining the drain and a surface underneath that is more orangey with many streaks of white clay. 5823 is peeling away from the clayey surface underneath quite easily. With the removal of 5823 we are hoping to reveal the foundation trench for wall 5741. 5823 appears to run under wall 5649 at the east. The surface revealed with the excavation of 5823 has more white clay than originally thought. Perhaps this clayey soil was used as a more water resistent base to put the dirt and pebble surface on top of. It is also possible that the clayey surface represents an interior floor, implying that the function of the space was changed from interior to exterior at the time the pebbly floor 5823 was deposited.
