Context:   5909
Page:   0
Date:   2008/06/13
Stratum:   60%: tile, pottery, pebbles (sm-lg), cobbles, marble chips
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the E. The soil color is dark reddish yellow. The soil compaction is weakly cemented. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Deposit 5909 is a pebbly courtyard surface in Quadrant A full of large inclusions. It is deeper than the surface layers above it and did not reveal more pebbles, but a hard packed dirt surface. The surface revealed by the removal of 5909 appears to be the surface cut for the construction of the foundation for wall 5463. The pebbly surface 5909 appears to have been a crust on a fairly deep layer of fill that covers the floor which is cut for the construction of wall 5463. The surface below 5909 has few pebbles, rather it does not resemble any of the courtyard surfaces above it. Because of the depth of the fill and cut in the surface beneath it, it appears that 5909 was the first floor of the courtyard.
Later Notes - S. Gallimore (7/4/09)
Surface revealed by removal of context 5909 now labeled as context 5944.
