| Description: | The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is clayey silt. | |
| Notes: | Floor surface in west half of room which is west of courtyard of Byzantine house. Context 5927 consists of compacted earth and tile and appears to be one of several leveling fills in this room. The fills in the east half of the room pass beneath those in the west half which indicates context 5927 is the latest and should be removed first. Scraping quickly revealed heaps of tile fragments without any type of arrangement. Tile fragments ranged in size, but most appear under 15cm in length. Larger fragments (exceeding 15cm in length) more frequent in lower areas of context 5927. It is possible that context 5927 continues farther to the west to the western edge of what had been interpretted as a robbing trench. This edge has visible fragments of tile within it. Along with tile fragments, fill also appears to include several large cobbles. Large tile fragments appear at lowest level of context 5927 on western edge. Possible that they represent a leveling course for a wall. In north part of context became clear that tiles lying flat in regular order (labeled context 5930) a separate feature likely representing some type of small platform. At end of removal of context 5927, decided it does not continue across apparent robbing trench. | |
