Context 5931 is apparent leveling fill in west half of room north of courtyard of Byzantine house. One of a series of such fills in this room with those in east half running beneath those in west half. This is currently lastest of the filles making it logical choice for excavation. In northern part of context 5931 had been a tile platform (context 5930) which was removed.
Fill contained large number of small tile fragments. Excavation of context 5931 revealed that larger tiles on western edge of context do in fact represent a leveling course for a wall. Soil for this leveling course was more compact.
Within the fill also several fragments of bone and teeth and a fragment of a millstone. A coin (2009-16) was also reovered. Also a small bronze ring and a TC antefix. Revealed beneath context 5931 was surface of compact earth with no tile evident. The concentration of ash and charcoal continued to be in SW corner. The ash/charcoal was much more evident on surface which was revealed. The revealed surface appears to be a floor.
Context 5931 also continued across robbing trench to its western edge.
In northern part of context 5931 the removal revealed a surface with compacted soil and jumbled tile. This may overlie the floor surface revealed farther to the south by removal of context 5931. Soil from context 5931 was soft clayey silt which had been compacted down around the tile and other fill. It was poorly sorted with tile fragments with stones of various sizes (pebbles to medium cobbles). Inclusions were approximately 30%.
Context 5931 cuts partly into a small section of the leveling course for a wall revealed by removal of context 5931.
At northern edge of context 5931, smaller concentration of ash/charcoal appeared. A similar deposit also appeared in center of context.
