Description:   The context shape in plan is sub-rectangular. The top break of the cut is sharp. The sides of the cut are vertical. The break at the base of the cut is sharp. The base of the cut is vertical sides and flat base. Truncation: None.
Notes:   This context is the cut of a pit already excavated in the 1960s. At the beginning of the season we cleaned it out in order to remove the debris that had accumulated in it and further define the lines of the cut. After cleaning the pit we identified the lines of cuts on the north and south that indicated that the previous fill in two separate contexts (5937 in the north and 5940 in the south) and gave this cut number to the resultant cut after excavation.
The cut is roughly rectangular in the deeper end, bounded in the east by wall 10085 and the unexcavated material below it, in the south by threshold 5919 and the material below it; and to the west it cuts the series of floors and fills below wall 10080.
In the east part of the pit the cut extends deeper and it is more circular in shape. There may have been a pithos excavated here and not indicated elsewhere.
If context 6046 is a robbing trench, then this pit is later, and cut the fill of the robbing trench.
Notes June 19, 2009: (Rask) This area was originally excavated by Berg on June 10th, 1961 (NB 229). He notes working in the area between his walls 33, 27, and 23, our walls 10080/10094, 10087, 10076.10077. Although a figure-8-esque pit is visible in the end of excavation photographs (Vol 18, 1960 II, p 32, 61-24-4), excavated by Potenza and Boehm as 5935, Berg does not note the excavation of a deep pit. This may be because the work was done on the last day of the excavation season and ended at 12 noon. The material was saved as Lot 662.
