Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the E. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   N.B. Context number 5943 was not used in 2009. For consistency, it is being used during the excavation season in 2010.
Context 5943 is located in the southern part of the room west of the courtyard of the Byzantine house. It was revealed during the removal of context 6679 and is defined by a cut (6326). It appears to be a fill within the cut, which is mostly rectangular, but with a circular extension to the northwest. Potentially it represents some type of robbing trench.
The soil is soft, dark yellowish brown clayey silt with 5% inclusions (stones, tile, pottery, bone). A few large boulders appeared in the context, possibly from a wall.
As digging continued it became clear that context 5943 is a fill associated with a circular bothros. The decision was made to take one sample for flotation and to sieve part of the dirt from the context. There was little pottery being turned up during the digging so there did not appear to be much need to sieve 100%, but a sample should be informative. Several marble fragments also turned up as well as part of a stone quern.
Bothros 5943 is located approximately 2m west of bothros 6377 which appears to have nearly identical dimensions. Both of these pits also have similar north-south coordinates.
Overall this pit produced few finds: pottery, bone, iron, glass
One piece of pottery recovered from the pit appears to be early 13th century in date. It came from the far southern part of the pit near the top of the fill. After reviewing notes for previous contexts, it appears that this pit may actually be a Frankish pit originally dug in the 1960s. As digging progressed in the 2009 season this pit lost any definitive structure and it appears we have rediscovered the pit and are currently continuing its excavation to a lower level. This indicates that the pit dates much later than the most recently excavated contexts from this room. The boundaries of this pit were erased last year with the excavation of contexts 6658 and 6664.
In the north part of the pit, several large boulders can be seen sticking out of the scarp. There is also a large slab (possibly a paving slab associated with an E-W Roman road) under these boulders. It is possible that this is the curb of the road being revealed, although the orientation would have to be checked.
Since context 5943 is a continuation of a pit dug in the 1960s it appears that it was quite deep when it was originally dug in the Frankish period. Perhaps it represents a well, or at least an attempt to dig a well which may have been hindered when they came down on the road/structure. At the very least, its depth will be at least double that of what is recorded for context 5943.
Numerous coins were recovered from this context including 2010-002, 2010-003, 2010-005, 2010-006, 2010-007, 2010-008. After the third coin was revealed during the digging, the decision was made to sieve several buckets to see if any other small finds were being missed.
The orientation of the large slabs revealed in pit 5943 also places them in line with wall 55 at the east end of the courtyard.
We decided to change contexts after 1.02m before continuing.
Fills from this pit were also dug in 2008
