Description:   The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   Context 5980 is leveling fill in center of room to north of courtyard of Byzantine house. Over a tile fill to north and floor to south. Relationship of tile fill to floor still unknown so this context to be removed to try to clarify this. Removal of context 5980 at northern end showed continuation of tile fill. Soil is dark reddish brown clayey silt with 20% inclusions moderately sorted (ash/charcoal; stones; ceramic sherds).
Context 5980 produced some bone and a large iron spike.
Removal of 5980 at eastern side seemed to reveal surface beneath which appears to be same as floor surface in NW corner of room. Removal of this context also showed that tile fill (context 5981) abuts against floor surface to south.
