Description:   The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   We are excavateing a balk to the east of wall 5965 left by the 1960s excavation. We are attempting to establish the chronological relationship of this balk to the balks on the north and south of foundation 5552, as well as to establish the chronology and phasing of the walls in the area. Because foundation 5985 is still being excavated we will begin the excavations of the balk to the south of foundation 5552, even though it is chronologically earlier. We've resumed excavation of deposit 5984 which is proving difficult for Panos the pickman because the removal of a pier (=contexts 5957, 5971, 5978, 5985) has left a gaping hole to the north of the balk, the only viable approach to the top of the balk. The soil showed flecks of carbonized material, some as large as a coarse pebble. Removal of deposit 5984 revealed two separate soil compositions. To the west (=deposit 6002) the soil was harder and redder than deposit 5984, and to the east the soil was much softer (=deposit 6006).
