Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark greyish brown. It is sandy silt. Structure materials: Medium and large angular cobbles. Material size: 0.20m x 0.15m x 0.10m to 0.10m x 0.12m x 0.10m. Material finish: unfinished. Material construction: uncoursed. Material bonding: none apparent.
Notes:   This context is the bottom of a foundation trench for a pier or an arch to the west of threshold 5919. The soil is looser and greyer than the red compact soil outside the cut. This part of the foundation contains some small and medium cobbles that are pretty even on all sides, as well as some long and flatter small angular boulders. These stones are significantly larger than those in higher levels, but are still within the cut for the foundation trench. Two coins were found in this unit (2009-21: 1026.67, 278.15, 84.19; 2009-24: sieve).
We came down on soil without cobble or boulder inclusions, characterized by hard red soil. We stopped the context here, and interpret this to be the bottom of the west pier foundation. Just before this level we came down on the largest stones in the pier foundation (ca. 0.30m by 0.25cm).
This context became narrower E-W because we came down on some stones along the west edge of the unit that are outside the cut (extending about 15 cm E from the original edge of the context). These stones are at an elevation of 84.14, about 0.50m above the bottom of the context.
