Stratum:   Silty sand with 40% inclusions (sub-rounded fine through coarse pebbles, platy angular cobbles and boulders, tile, ceramics)
Description:   The soil color is dark yellowish grey. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   We are excavating a balk to the E of wall 5965 left by the 1960s excavation. We are attempting to establish the chronology and phasing of the walls in the area. Initially, we thought this balk was related to the balks on the N and S of foundation 5552, but removal of deposit 5984 revealed two separate soil compositions. The one to the W is harder and redder, but seems to cut the one the E. Both deposits are cut by the foundation of a pier (=cut 6065). We have elected to excavate the west deposit (6002) first because its shape and the fact that it is laid against wall 5965 suggests it is the fill of a robbing trench (=cut 6012) and thus later. Meanwhile, the soil to the E appears to be related to a larger soil deposit even further to the E, lending support to the theory that deposit 6002 is a robbing trench. Excavation of this context threatens to cause the collapese of the deposit to the E (6006) so we are going to dig that lense in parallel with this balk. We are doing this because deposit 6006 (and the lense it is laid on) seems to be contemporary with the soil deposit revealed by the removal of wall 5919 and we want to be able to compare the deposits. We excavated deposit 6006 below the current level of deposit 6002 because it was obviously about to fall apart. Now that deposit 6006 is gone, we will finish deposit 6002. Removal of the remains of deposit 6002 revealed the top of another rubble wall (=6027). The size and orientation of the fill leads us to conclude that it was dumped into robbing trench 6012.
