Stratum:   Inclusions: 5% small and medium subrounded pebbles. 610 is redder and softer than 6007. 6010 is redder than 6005.
Description:   The soil color is dark reddish black. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is well sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   This context is the soft fill partially sealed under floor 6007. Context 6005 covered this whole area, and was a softer fill with some charcoal inclusions. Excavation of this soft fill exposed a small patch of floor (6007) with heavey charcoal inclusions. Under the floor and some of 6010, we found this softer soil, which goes down fairly deep but doesn't extend as far N or as far as the robbing trench 6004 to the west.
The sandy soil of 6008 abutts this context on the E, and more courses from 10079 have ben exposed to the S. In the fill of the first 20 cm of this unit, we found a coin (2009-30). Because this unit first appeared to be fill under floor 6007, we did not sieve the top, but as soon as it appered to be a pit, we sieved 100%. And took a sample for flotation. This soil has turned up a large amount of bone and coarse and cooking handles, with fewer body sherds than one might expect.
About 50 cm down, along the W edge, we hit a hole that seemed to be rather deep, possibly the same as a deep cavity to the S of wall 10079 and the stone lined drain E of 1008. We are still exposing this feature in our own pit and connot yet determine if they are the same. The W and N edges of this feature are are straight and meet at a right angle, which might make this a cistern or something more regular than a pit.
At the base of this context we've exposed a long flat stone slab abutting 10079, and after cleaning the rest of this soil we've exposed 4 stones total, going from the SW into wall 10079, curving to the the NE out of the context. There are voids visible under these stones, and to the SE. We are confident that this is a drain (6024), probably connecting with the drain outside wall 10083. The direction of this feature makes this possible, as well as the scope of the stones. We took elevations on the top of the four stones and from SW-NE, the feature slopes down to the NW 32 cm in a short distance (from SW-most to NE-most stone: 84.87, 84.76, 84.62, 84.55). The drain 3.5 m to the NE outside wall 10083 has a top elevation of 84.65.
When we exposed these 4 capstones of 6024, we closed the context.
