Stratum:   Sandy silt with 40% inclusions (rounded fine through coarse pebbles, platy angular cobbles, tile)
Description:   The soil color is dark brownish grey. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We are excavating a baulk to the S of foundation 5552 left as a martyr by the 1960s excavation in order to establish the relationship between it and the baulk to the N of the foundation, as well as to establish the chronology and phasing of the walls in the area. We initially thouht the baulk to the E of wall 5965 was related, but this baulk turned out to be an entirely separate scenario (see notes for robbing trench fill 6002). After removing floor 6013 from the southern balk, we have reached another floor (=deposit 6035), partially covered by a layer of ashy soil (=deposit 6017). The finds in the ashy layer do not seem to be substantially different from the finds in later layers. Removal of deposit 6017 revealed that floor 6035 indeed continue south under the ashy layer, as we expected. The floor surface included a line of suprisingly large stones, for which see notes on wall 6025 and floor 6035.
