Category:   Deposit

Context:   6234

Date:   2009/05/04
Stratum:   40% tiles, small cobbles, rounded pebbles, angular and platy cobbles
Description:   The soil color is dark brownish red. The soil compaction is weakly cemented. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We opened 6234 as the tiley rocky fill inside a circular pit (cut 6224) which seems to cut the pebble floor in the N-E of the room. This deposit makes up the lower fill of the the cut 6224. The upper two halves are 6225 and 6229; because the pit seems to have been truncated and sliced in half by cut 6199, we did not at first realize that fills 6225 and 6229 were part of the same deposit filling a circular pit. Once we established that they were part of the same context, we closed them and began a new context underneath them to encompass the whole shape of the circular pit (6224). In the lower half of the pit (fill 6234), the inclusions were many - tile fragments, lots of coarse white plastery building material, bits of iron and glass, and one coin (#68). The deposit seems to have been truncated by 6199 on the top southern half and cut by postholes 6193 & 6195.
Once we saw that we had one context, we took a sample for water floation that was begun in the center of the pit, reached east and west to the two postholes, and extended south to almost the edge of the pit.
