Description:   The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is well sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   Context 6244 is part of a balk beneath wall 5508 in the south end of the courtyard of the Byzantine house. This context is one of a series of deposits left unexcavated last year because wall 5508 was not yet slated for removal. These contexts are continuations of deposits from the surface of the courtyard, and parts of them were also excavated to the south. We must attempt to coordinate these contexts with their corresponding contexts to the north and south. This context was distinguished by its reddish color and fewer inclusions.
This context is actually 4 small patches, all identified by their reddish color.
Beneath this context was revealed, as expected, more of one of the pebbly floor surfaces characteristic of the courtyard.
Later notes (5/5/09 - SG): Context 6244 does not appear to match up with any contexts excavated in 2008 on either side of wall 5508. Perhaps it represents a small amount of fill put down right before wall laid down to act as a leveling layer.
