Description:   The soil color is light brownish grey. It is sandy silt. The context shape in plan is rectrangular. The top break of the cut is not perceptible. The sides of the cut are vertical. The break at the base of the cut is not perceptible. The base of the cut is tapered blunt point. Structure materials: limestone. Material size: .15x .2x. 25. Material finish: rough faced. Material construction: dumped rubble. Material bonding: dirt. Features: 3 lines of dumped rubble.
Notes:   This context was exposed in session 1, part of the upper foundations of this same pier were dug of a separate context, #6117, in that case, the excavators stopped because they felt that the matrix of soil and dirt was much looser than it was when it reached this context- a series of dumped rubble fills running in relatively even coursing going down in a small area. The working hypothesis is that we are dealing with lower foundations of the pier which cuts a much higher surface. For the sake of relationships relative to what is currently exposed, this pier will be later than the "paving" [putative] to the north, and the surface 6164 to the west. As stated before, these relationships are not directly associated, and will nor be reflected in the Harris Matrix.
As the cobbles continue to be excavated, the shape of the cut emerged as square, with straight sides bounded by the two walls, the "paving" (putative) and the exposed floor surface to the w; however the very bottom revealed that the foundation for the pier was actually cutting an earlier foundation trench (puative), perhaps for wall 5553. Only further investigation an clarify whether this hypothesis is correct. However, one other thing that this context revealed was that wall 5553, on its lower courses, appears to have construction techniques that share characteristics of 5483, also N-S, to the west.
