Area:   Nezi Field
Context Type:   Fill
Title:   Fill in robbing trench
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1103
Context:   6255
Page:   0
Date:   2009/05/05
Stratum:   20% sherds, subrounded, spherical/angular cobbles; medium and coarse pebbles, bone, shell, plaster, small charcoal lumps, waster
Description:   The soil color is dark brownish black. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   6255 was opened as the fill inside rt 6254. Specifically, this is the southern fill inside this rt, the northern portion having been removed on 4.5.09 as 6240, the fill inside pit 6241. It wasn't until we reached a level when digging that pit where the sides of the rt were clear that we realized the pit was actually cutting the rt. Although the soil composition and inclusions in 6255 are similar to that in 6240, the two depositis should be considered separate filling actions.
Additionally, 6255 continues north into the scarp at approx. 1032.30. We are leaving that for the present since there is possibly another rt running north from this spot and the relations between the two cuts are unclear. Bone material provides good evidence for primary deposition (bird bones) mixed with secondary deposition. Lots of different species (some unique for the site) and lots of specimens of the same taxon.
6.5.09 notes:
6255 was closed when more tiles and larger cobbles began appearing in the soil. This was below the level of the top of the original foundation cut.
