Stratum:   30-40% inclusions of pottery, tile and pebbles; soil is firmer than 6211, 6213, and 6222; also more clay (white layer) than these contexts.
Description:   The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We are excavating 6258 now, as we have just excavated the corresponding (?) layer to the south, 6256 (separated by wall 6120). 6258 is characterized by its firm, clayey surface, as it is composed of the whitish (frankish) clay layer that was noted in the stratigraphy since the excavation of surfaces 6140 and 6152. This surface level proved to be fairly thick (ca. .1m). As a result some very sizeable pieces of tile and ceramics were preserved (avg. size .1-.2m), including a near-complete amphora toe, a worked stone column fragment (.25-.3m) and a stone bowl (ca. .15 m) On the other hand, comparatively little bone was found.
The white clay layer seems to be quite thin (ca. .01-.02 m thick), with a soft-packed reddish brown sub-surface layer immediately beneath. Despite the thinness of the clay layer, however, it did require our pickman Panos to use a considerable amount of force to be able to break its surface. This context stopped at a layer of even softer packed reddish brown soil.
This excavation also reveals the cut for threshold 5671. While the other surfaces were contemporary with 5671, the surface revealed by this excavation pre dates 5671 and is below it.
In addition to the cut that Panos defined (6261) for threshold 5671, we noted that the softer surface that he had been uncovering earlier into the context (and further to the east) was giving way to a distinctly hard surface; this was located right next to the threshold 5671 and is the level into which 6261 cuts. When excavation continued westward, the surface began to rake southward and many flat-lying sherds were discovered to represent fill with a bothros (cut 6263), which stretched from the edge of the threshold all the way to wall 5483 (N-S). The bothros (6263) provides a terminus post quem for the surface 6258 and a terminus ante quem for the new surface that we revealed in front of the threshold.
When the area to the east was cleaned a final time, the exposed soil was found to be variant; there was a soft area to the east of the harder floor surface exposed in front of the threshold, a second, different and firmer swath to the east of that, and finally a 2.0 x 1.0 m stretch containing many flat-lying tiles. The soft areas may cut the two different surfaces; ultimately they will not be given context numbers, nor will they be excavated. Only the bothros will be taken, for dating purposes.
