| Description: | Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light reddish grey. The soil compaction is very soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt. | |
| Notes: | 6297 was opened as a lighter and greyer deposit of well fill below 6291. This soil change was noticed in the morning after the workmen had already removed eight buckets of soil, and before the trench supervisors arrived. There might have been some overdigging. The soil was exceptionally dry and brittle, with angular, platy cobbles, small-medium pebbles, charcoal, bones, tiles, pottery. The walls inside the well, constructed of stones and tile, end approx. 2.08 below the top of the well head, but the structure continues downward, cut into bedrock. The fill remained grewy and dry, so we did not change contexts. On 8.5.09, we stopped digging because we needed to set up a winch as the excavation level was getting deep. As of 8.5.09, the context has not been closed. The diameter of the well increases as it gets deeper: 0.90 from the top of the well head structure the diameter is approx. 0.81 (at the head itself, it is 0.38). [total, as of 11-5-09: 66 zembilia of soil; 3 buckets of pottery: #1 from upper levels and #2 and #3 from lower levels] On 11-5-09 we decided to resume digging, but will set up the winch. We are closing 6297 so that we can open a new context and keep track of the stratigraphy of the well. 6254 is the new and fourth context number associated with this well this season. | |
