Description:   The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   Context 6316 is a possible leveling fill in the southwestern part of courtyard of Byzantine house bounded on west by robbing trench 5510. This is the last context we can excavate in this area because surface revealed by removal of context 6316, a reddish fill, passes beneath staircase 6296 and cannot be removed until permission gained to remove that structure. Context 6316 is likely a leveling fill for one of the floor surfaces excavated at a higher elevation (possibly floor 6295). It contains approximately 40% inclusions (mainly ceramics and stones) which are jumbled up in a dark yellowish brown clayey silt matrix.
As was expected, the reddish fill was revealed by removal of context 6316.
Context 6316, being a deep fill, will likely not match up with the continuous floor levels in the courtyard proper. This tells us that the courtyard space changed over time. At time this fill laid down, courtyard only the space north of wall 5783. Fill could have been attempt to raise level of this space south of wall 5783 to one equal to a floor surface in the courtyard when that room was expanded. It later contracted to its original size when wall 5508 was built. The floor directly above fill 6316 (6295) should thus represent the first floor built across the expanded courtyard and dating it and its associated fills could give a good indication of when this construction and conversion of space occurred.
