Stratum:   20% inclusions of pebbles, some pottery, large stones ca. .3-.8m, small pieces of tile
Description:   The soil color is dark brownish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   This context contains the large stones ca. .3-.8m that were revealed by cleaning 6348 and further defined by the excavation of 6352, It is possible that these rocks may have formed a wellhead (possibly Roman?) so we are doing this excavation to better understand the formation of this area.
Panos is looking to find a blocking stone for the top of the well. We would also like to excavate some pottery so that we can date the well (though at this time we speculate it may be Roman).
The bedrock to the east suggests that the well was dug through the bedrock- this is compelling evidence for it being a well because if it was a bothros pit it would be less likelythat someone would have gone to the trouble of digging through bedrock for it.
Some of the large .3-.8m stones coming out seem to be finished (w flat sides) while others seem to be completely unfinished.
UPDATE, 12-5-09, S.L.: 1960s excavations reported stopping at a red clay stereo at 83.924 elevation, which would correspond well with the level excavated in this context; this would mean that the levels below that were untouched.
