Notes:   Structure 6359 is wall foundation which appears to have been below walls 5442 and 6069. It is oriented N-S and is located in central part of courtyard of Byzantine house. Discovered that this foundation still existed during excavation of cleaning context 6347. Much of today (11-5-09) spent trying to clarify relationships and sequences of contexts in this area and necessary to take this first before continuing with other layers.
This foundation made up of unworked limestone cobble and boulders and appears to be random uncoursed.
Soil is dark yellowish brown clayey silt with ca. 35% inclusions (mostly stones). Deep lozenge-shaped nature of this foundation appears to be similar to pier foundations found in rooms to east and southeast. Aligned on eastern side with eastern side of wall 6318 which could suggest that only the part of the courtyard east of wall 6359 was open air while the part over 6359 and to the west was roofed. Perhaps what is labeled as wall 6318 is an associated pier foundation.
This pier is later than the robbed out wall defined by robbing trench 6349 (cut 6350). This could suggest that when wall associated with 6349 robbed necessary to still have supports which could mean this is when 6359 and 6318 were added.
Some marble came up during excavation of 6359. Removal of context 6359 revealed at its bottom a clayey surface in the south. Several floor surfaces visible in the scarp at different elevations.
When final bottom reached what was revealed was a wall running NE-SW which is likely early (Roman?) in date.
