Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is mixed- see description.
Notes:   This context was opened after the previous context 6438 was closed after approximately 12 cm. During the digging of this context, a lantern was used which drastically improved the visibility at the bottom of the well. Several things became clear: first, the soil composition of the context was very mixed, with sections having dry and brittle clay of a browner color and other lenses/deposits within the context made up of a a compact, dense, hard white clay, often mixed with bone and ceramic material. Second, the soil at the outer edge of the well had less clay and was light and chunky. Outside of this chunky ring was a crust of dirt about 2cm thick that circled the entire well; the break between this crust and the chunkier, dry outer ring was very sharp - the chunkier dirt easily fell away from the smooth surface of the crust. When the crust was removed it held its shape. Third, the context included a significant amount of charcoal, some of which preserved the shape of the wood to a length of 7 cm. In general the soil was also ashy.
10 buckets of this context were excavated by Rask. As with the previous context (6438) excavated by Wells, special attention was paid to the bone material to determine if there were articulated parts. No positively articulated bones were identified.
