Description:   The soil color is light pinkish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   The last context excavated in this far western room was 6439- a martyr of contexts 5887 (excavated in 2008) and 6428 (excavated in 2009, session II). All three of those contexts were comprised of an ashy fill that came down on a hard, light colored, level surface (context 6540). Additionally, the excavation of 6439 revealed more of what is probably foundation trench fill 6425 [cut 6427]; we didn't excavate it at the time that it was revealed because it's in a hard-to-reach place and would have collapsed the section. However, when we reach a practical point, we'll take that fill separately.
The existence of this floor below the floor 6428 (which was cut for the foundation trench 6428) demonstrates that it would have operated with a wall predating wall 6284.
We are looking for the line of a robbing trench between the walls 5411 and 5519 (revealed by the excavation of fill 5456, excavated by green team during session II) The fill within the robbing trench appeared to run southward beneath the current surface context 6540. Therefore, it is possible that we will reveal the southern edge of a cut containing the fill, or at the very least a continuous swath of it will allow excavations to continue to the north of the robbed-out area.
The removal of 6540 revealed several different strata of different compositions: 1) In the southwestern corner, soft soil close to the wall and filling a cut into 2) a soft soil, lighter in color, just to the east of foundation trench 6427, which in turn fills a cut into 3) a hard surface, which 4) appears to cover a second hard stratum with tiles intact (levelling fill, apparently) which is cut by something filled with 5) more tiles and levelling fill in a softer matrix, which lies next to 6) a softer soil, with less tile, maybe the same as number 5. Additionally, a final soft stratum lay just to the north of pit cut 6380; it appeared to cut the aforementioned soft tiled stratum and 6) a soft fill within a cut that slices both 4) and 3).
We'll take 1) first, since it's cutting first in th esequence. We never found the line of the robbing trench cut near the missing wall section of wall 5519, nor did we find a continuation of foundation trench 6427 until we excavated context 6548, which clarified the line.
POST-EXCAVATION NOTE, 15-06-09, S.L.: Contexts 6663 and 6649, at least one of which underlies this context, were found to contain two joining coarse incised ware body fragments of the Frankish period, dating to the mid-13th century. These sherds will stratigraphically change the dates of every context that lies above them by as much as two centuries, of which this context is one. Until it is decided whether there is some other reason that this discrepancy might have occurred (e.g., these contexts need to be situated in a different place on the Harris Matrix), the dates will remain as they have been assigned on the basis of pottery/stratigraphy prior to discovering this discrepancy.
