Stratum:   clayey sandy silt: 10% inclusions, roots (0.01 m diameter), small angular pebbles, small angular ceramics, few angular tiles
Description:   The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is moderately sorted. It is mixed- see description.
Notes:   When we excavated context 6540, we expected that the line of foundation trench cut 6427 would be found to continue southward, however, what detered us from that expectation was that the southern edge of the cut appeared to be bounded by hard soil, basically following the line of only about half of the wall. Excavating this level of fill, owever, it became clear that the foundation trench DOES run the length of the wall. It may be because of the martyring of this context during session II that this filling irregularity occurred; but at this point, upper fill 6548 seems to have revealed a stratum of fill that should be equated with fill 6425; likewise, we will emend the context sheet for foundation trench 6427 to reflect the knowledge that the cut continues from north to south, the length of the wall 6284 between east-west walls 5484 and 5411.
This poses no danger of contamination for floor 6440, even though excavation occurred there, beause the material taken from this section of the context was intentionally not collected.
POST-EXCAVATION NOTE, 15-06-09, S.L.: Contexts 6663 and 6649, at least one of which underlies this context, were found to contain two joining coarse incised ware body fragments of the Frankish period, dating to the mid-13th century. These sherds will stratigraphically change the dates of every context that lies above them by as much as two centuries, of which this context is one. Until it is decided whether there is some other reason that this discrepancy might have occurred (e.g., these contexts need to be situated in a different place on the Harris Matrix), the dates will remain as they have been assigned on the basis of pottery/stratigraphy prior to discovering this discrepancy.
