Notes:   5.4.2012
We began digging the western side of wall 332 in order to see if the change in soil with context 646 is in fact the result of a foundation trench. We are having the entire thing sieved because the material will be useful for dating the context if it is in fact a foundation trench. The soil of 654 is similar to 646 possibly siltier.
Having excavated to a depth of 86.31 there is no sign that the wall construction has changed above and below the top elevation of 664 in a way that would indicate that foundation courses of wall 332 are exposed. The courses of wall 332 all appear to be worked squared stones in regular courses throughout the height of the visible wall. Also the boundary of 654 with 646 is diffuse and irregular and these contexts consist of similar silty sand and inclusions. 646 is more compacted but it is possible that both 646 and 654 were deposited in the same event. And 654 remains less compacted as it was protected by wall 332. We have taken a soil sample to better compare the composition/ use of these two contexts.
