Context:   6563

Date:   2009/06/03
Stratum:   10% angular tabular cobbles, pebbles, little pottery
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the W. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   6563 was opened as the blackish fill of the north scarp in our room. This fill was felt to be inside a robbing trench perhaps as cuts were observed running E-W north of the pier foundation cut and north of the well. The well does not cut this fill. However, Guy Sanders does not want to excavate the well. SO at least excavation of the surrounding fills wil give us a TPQ for its construction.
This fill reaches the staircase on the west and is cut by the pier robbing trench at the east. No relation to the north as that was excavated in the 1960s. North of the well, 6563 revealed a cut running N-S and a part of the foundation cut for the well. The N-S cut wasn’t noticed on the west - really hardly there - and as we were working from west to east, it wasn't until we revealed the east side of the cut that we realized we were in it.
It is still unclear what the fill was. This is due to the narrowness of the context and the fact that the north side was so disturbed by decades of exposure. The cuts described above are clear as is the cut for the north side of the pier foundation.** So the fill inside the pier cut was not fully excavated where we dug it.
6563 was closed at the level of where the N-S cut and well cut were exposed in the west and the pier cut was exposed in the east.
**Later excavation of this cut showed that what we thought was the north edge of the pier foundation cut (6273) really was not. We are opening a cleaning basket to find it.
Notes June 21, 2009: Further excavation has shown that the possible E-W cut that the pickman identified running north of 6273 and north of well 6288 was not a cut; rather it was caused by deterioration from the 60s scarp and the weathering effects of the tree roots breaking away soil from the well (6630). The darker and softer soil caused by this activity created a false context, and therefore the material from 6563 was contaiminated and should not be used to establish dates or stratigraphy for the Harris Matrix.
