Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   This context was begun as the robbing fill inside what we have been calling a pier foundation cut. The context was covered on the north by 6563 and on the south by 6565. What seemed to be a very clear cut was revealed under 6563. Inside the cut was very soft dark reddish soil and north of the cut was a lighter yellowish clay. 6569 was the dark reddish soil.
Since we thought this was part of the robbing fill in the pier foundation cut, we decided to somewhat follow the divisions we used when we excavated the original robbing trench, so we stopped the context at the level at which the southern edge of the pier foundation cut was preserved.
At this point it became clear that the N-S edges of the cut continued on to the north beyond the scarp of the 1960s trench, parallel to wall 10095 and might continue under the yellow clay. Because we were unsure of the yellow clay deposit in what now looked to be a longer N-S trench, and because we began to question the connection between what we saw as a robbing trench (6254) and a pier foundation (6273) cut, we closed the context. We intend our next move to be a cleaning pass in the 1960s trench to the immediate north, bounded by walls 10095, W55, W54. This should allow us to explore the extent (if preserved) of the N-S trench.
