| Notes: | Following the excavation of context 6628, we revealed some softer fill in front of foundations 6575; the line was unclear, and we were unsure of its continuation (or lack thereof); therefore, we held off on excavating it. However, now that we have noticed the ostensible foundation trench for wall 5519 to the south, cutting a surface below the surface revelaed, we are wondering wht this soft fill is for and whther the foundation trench will continue below it. This proved to be the case; the foundation trench was found below some of the soft fill bounded by hard soil to the north and south. To expose the entirety of the cut, it's necessary to remove the surface exposed by 6572. POST-EXCAVATION NOTE, 15-06-09, S.L.: Contexts 6663 and 6649, at least one of which underlies this context, were found to contain two joining coarse incised ware body fragments of the Frankish period, dating to the mid-13th century. These sherds will stratigraphically change the dates of every context that lies above them by as much as two centuries, of which this context is one. Until it is decided whether there is some other reason that this discrepancy might have occurred (e.g., these contexts need to be situated in a different place on the Harris Matrix), the dates will remain as they have been assigned on the basis of pottery/stratigraphy prior to discovering this discrepancy. | |
