Title:   upper fill of pit/slumped fill

Context:   6587

Date:   2009/06/04
Stratum:   20%; small rectangular and subrectangular pebbles, roots (0.005 m diam.), few ceramics, tile
Description:   The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   WE selected this stratum for excavation because it appeared to bound the floor exposed by 6572 to the south, and perhaps to fill a cut into that surface. In fact, softness in this area has been visible for some time (since 6540 was removed), but we have interpreted the softness as slumping heretofore, knowing that a very clean cut does occur into red soil at a lower elevation.
When the fill was excavated, we uncovered more of the cut that has been visible in the scarp, running east-west across the bounded room, nearly its entire length. The cut still lies beneath a hard, flat surface, however (the one revealed by 6572), so that must be taken before the cut- also, the foundation trench along wall 5519/foundations 6575 can be recorded and excavated.
POST-EXCAVATION NOTE, 15-06-09, S.L.: Contexts 6663 and 6649, at least one of which underlies this context, were found to contain two joining coarse incised ware body fragments of the Frankish period, dating to the mid-13th century. These sherds will stratigraphically change the dates of every context that lies above them by as much as two centuries, of which this context is one. Until it is decided whether there is some other reason that this discrepancy might have occurred (e.g., these contexts need to be situated in a different place on the Harris Matrix), the dates will remain as they have been assigned on the basis of pottery/stratigraphy prior to discovering this discrepancy.
