Description:   The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Context 6607 is a deposit of dumped fill in the NW corner of the room NW of the courtyard of the Byz. House. The deposit is cut by pit cut 6116 to the E, and contained or cut by wall stumps 10111(South) and 6130 (east). We are attempting to determine if there is any relationship between the soil in this lense and the one to the east of the pit. For this reason, and because this deposit is so small, we are sieving the context for maximum retrieval of pottery. The presence of a small millstone in the context suggests this is dumped fill of some sort. Deeper in the context there was a great deal of large broken cooking pots, and as we went further, we discovered that what we thought was a millstone was actually a column base. The nature of this corner deposit is confusing, since it is contained by wall on 4 sides, but this area is far too small to be a room. The fill could therefore potentially be very useful in dating the walls. In fact, it is probably better to say that the deposit is cut by one or both of the aforementioned walls, since they appear to be later than wall 5562 to the N which appears to be founded upon a Roman wall against which this lense's soil is laid. All of this is to say that the original dimensions of the dumped fill remail a mystery, but the dumping action is later than wall 5562 at least, and the soil is cut by, probably, some combination of (but not all of) walls 5724, 10111, and 6130. Removal of this deposit revealled a soil that is redder and softer, and seems to be unrelated to the soil on the other side of the pit since it is redder and softer than that too and has fewer inclusions.
