Stratum:   2%: large angular stones, ceramics, pebbles
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the E. The soil color is dark pinkish brown. The soil compaction is weakly cemented. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   When we finished excavating context 6589, we had reached a) the flat, hard surface cut by the foundation trench for wall section 5519/6572 to the west, going as far as foundations 6575; and 2) a soft fill with tiles that seemed to be overlying a continuation of that surface.
Since we would like to know the extent of the foundation trench cut before we expose it, we will continue with the soft fill 6613. We hypothesize that this is debris or levelling fill used as a floor patch, and supporting this is the fact that small boulders were removed from in front (i.e., to the south of) the foundations as part of this context; also removed was a small jug, which was from the upper portion of the fill rather than from directly above the new surface beneath.
Again, this proved not to be the case; the excavation of the soft soil did yield more of the harder surface exposed after 6589, but it also yielded a very soft, ashy fill near foundations 6575- and no foundation trench cut. The ashy fill did appear to be overlying and not cutting a harder surface beneath; and perhaps it's the same hard surface revealed by the excavation of 6613 and 6589; we're going to excavate the ashy fill in hopes of clarifying the foundation trench line, as we've been doing thus far.
POST-EXCAVATION NOTE, 15-06-09, S.L.: Contexts 6663 and 6649, at least one of which underlies this context, were found to contain two joining coarse incised ware body fragments of the Frankish period, dating to the mid-13th century. These sherds will stratigraphically change the dates of every context that lies above them by as much as two centuries, of which this context is one. Until it is decided whether there is some other reason that this discrepancy might have occurred (e.g., these contexts need to be situated in a different place on the Harris Matrix), the dates will remain as they have been assigned on the basis of pottery/stratigraphy prior to discovering this discrepancy.
