Lot:   Lot 2009-101
Stratum:   5%: small subrectangula stones, small tile fragments, small angular cobbles
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the E. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is stongly cemented. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Surface 6624 was revealed by the excavation of surface 6589, and it was cut by foundation trench 6616, which supports east-west wall 5519.
We are excavating this surface because it overlies the string of contexts available for excavation at the present, including: 1) robbing trench going east-west, the line of which has been id'd, but which has not been revealed in full, as it continues beneath 2) a hard stratum that seems to be cut from the east by 3) a soft fill that goes against wall 5483, but again, does not have a boundary to the north, running below 4) a hard surface that seems to overlie the robbing trench cut and perhaps the eastern continuation of foundation trench 6616, excavated as surface 6624.
The surface that is being revealed is pink in color, hard, and is representative of the red "stereo" soil that appears just before bedrock. We have discovered the possibility that one of the reasons we're not finding continuations of these cuts (or why they become visible from lower elevations) is that the surface in this area was slanting downward to the east at the point that the cuts were created.
Near the middle of the east-west wall 5519, we uncovered two lines of small cobbles, running parallel north-south. To the east, we did find a small stripe of foundation trench fill; however, it was truncated by what clearly appears to be a bothros cut, clera in the surface exposed by this context. The bothros seems likely to continue below fills in the southeastern corner, so we need to take the soil that seems to cover it in order to clarify the size and shape of the cut, and whether it might also truncate the robbing trench fill; after the excavation fo the next context, 6631, it became clear that this was the case.
POST-EXCAVATION NOTE, 15-06-09, S.L.: Contexts 6663 and 6649, at least one of which underlies this context, were found to contain two joining coarse incised ware body fragments of the Frankish period, dating to the mid-13th century. These sherds will stratigraphically change the dates of every context that lies above them by as much as two centuries, of which this context is one. Until it is decided whether there is some other reason that this discrepancy might have occurred (e.g., these contexts need to be situated in a different place on the Harris Matrix), the dates will remain as they have been assigned on the basis of pottery/stratigraphy prior to discovering this discrepancy.
