Title:   ashy pit fill cutting foundation trench for wall 5
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1103
Context:   6639
Page:   0
Date:   2009/06/11
Stratum:   30%: tile fragments, platy angular cobbles, large pottery fragments, angular bones, small rounded pebbles
Description:   The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silt.
Notes:   We have moved to excavate this bothros because the cut truncates several other features of interest: the lower foundation trench cut in the northwestern corner of the room (for wall 5519/foundations 6575) and the large east-west cut into red "stereo" soil exposed by 6624. We are additionally hoping that the scarp of the cut may help to clarify anything about why we've been unable to locate a southern edge for the robbing cut.
The fill is of an ashy quality and contains many large inclusions, which seem to be cooking-related; is this cut related to kitchen waste? As more fill was removed, the foundations of wall 5483 became visible; if there ever was a west-facing foundation trench cut for this wall, we should be able to detect it in the south-facing section of the scarp of this bothros, which clearly would have cut it.
The context ended when we noticed that the fill, which continued to be loose, ashy and stone-chip rich, began to appear in the section. Therefore, what we appear to have are a series of cuts cutting cuts, with this one being the topmost. The large, new cut visible in the north-facing section may explain this irregular cut that we have been tracing as a putative robbing event going east-west; i.e., it may have destroyed the easternmost line of the cut.
POST-EXCAVATION NOTE, 15-06-09, S.L.: Contexts 6663 and 6649, at least one of which underlies this context, were found to contain two joining coarse incised ware body fragments of the Frankish period, dating to the mid-13th century. These sherds will stratigraphically change the dates of every context that lies above them by as much as two centuries, of which this context is one. Until it is decided whether there is some other reason that this discrepancy might have occurred (e.g., these contexts need to be situated in a different place on the Harris Matrix), the dates will remain as they have been assigned on the basis of pottery/stratigraphy prior to discovering this discrepancy.
