Description:   The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We are excavating a large area of fill in the NE corner of the room NW of the courtyard of the Byzantine house and running S along wall 6321. Our efforts to define context boundaries in this area, including formal cleaning 6634, informal sweepings, use of the water sprayer, mild scrapings, and partial demolition of well 6638, have yielded no certain borders, so we have elected to dig the entire area as a single deposit of fill. Slight (very slight) differences in soil in the areas surrounding the well have caused confusion for us and for the workmen. Particularly perplexing was an area of fill defined by a cut in the SE corner of the room, against wall 6321. Initially we thought it was a continuation of the robbing trench for wall 6375, since it is on the same orientation and of the same width. However, the trench fill seemed to disappear without a clear boundary in the area between well 6638 and wall 6321. This same phenomenon prevented us from identifying it as a foundation trench for wall 6321. The fact that the soil composition seems to be more or less the same in this area as well as in the area to the north of the well seemed sufficient justification to treat the entire area as a single context. We are sieving this context because we don't understand what it is, and we hope to obtain as much material as possible. We began with the trench-like feature in the SE corner of the room, and after removing about 20cm of soil came down on a wall that seems to be acontinuation of wall 6375. We then followed the line of that fill north along wall 6321 and immediately lost the line of the cut when we passed the well, though again we did not find a northern boundary for the trench. Continuing N past the well we did finally find what appeared to be a sloping cut boundary to the N. It is a bit narrower than the cut S of the well, but was likely disturbed by the well and/or well-construction cut 6641. At the southern end of the trench in this room, we came down upon a wall, as noted, bu thte rest of the trench yielded only a different soil composition. It is possible that the wall is only partially robbed out to the S but completely robbed out at its northern end, as suggested by Field Director Alicia Carter. Director Guy Sanders suggests that such an action could be explained as clearing activity for the construction of the well. Carter also notes tha the trench stops just to the N of the line of wall 6526, which we have pustulated may have bonded with wall 6375.
