Description:   The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is weakly cemented. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We are excavating this context that was cut by bothros 6645 in order to try to expose more of a second cut that appeared in the north-facing section of bothros cut 6645; what we discovered in excavation of that context was that the ashy fill that we had been excavating began to appear in the section; therefore, we are dealing with a situation where a) a bothros cut a cut or b) the bothros cut into a level 6649, resting above a loose fill that LOOKS in section like our fill. The former seems more likely, since we think that we have the same ashy fill in both places; a second, larger cut, if we find one, would also explain the seemingly truncated robbing trench cut we've thus far failed to find.
The change was diffuse, but identifiable: a larger patch of soil close to wall 5483 that was soft and which seemed to cut a harder patch of dirt, which in turn seemed to dissapate into softer fill further south. We spent some time trying to identify whether we were dealing with more levels of slumped fill or not, but it appeared that the soil close to the wall was filling a cut, perhaps- into the harder stratum. Therefore, we will continue there.
POST-EXCAVATION NOTE, 15-06-09, S.L.: Contexts 6663 and 6649, at least one of which underlies this context, were found to contain two joining coarse incised ware body fragments of the Frankish period, dating to the mid-13th century. These sherds will stratigraphically change the dates of every context that lies above them by as much as two centuries, of which this context is one. Until it is decided whether there is some other reason that this discrepancy might have occurred (e.g., these contexts need to be situated in a different place on the Harris Matrix), the dates will remain as they have been assigned on the basis of pottery/stratigraphy prior to discovering this discrepancy.
