Description: | Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes: | We opened context 6687 in order to remove a shallow layer of ash and harnded calcium carbonate. This context was at the top of the earth baulk separating wall 5678 and pit 5629. The North scarp of the baulk was very undercut, so we decided to excavate the area before it collapsed (digging wall 5678 threatened to disturb the baulk; we paused excavation of wall 5678 in order to excavate 6687 and 6689, below). Context 6687 was a firm, greyish layer with very few inclusions. It is delineated on the West by a line of fire-reddened earth (= cut 6691), probably a reflection of burning activity in the nearby area. This layer most likely extended further North originally, but was cut by pit 5629. This layer might have continued further East and/or South, as well, but was cut by robbing trench 5802 and wall 5678, respectively.
