Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is very dark brownish black. The soil compaction is very soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   Upon removing the hard ash layer 6687, we came down on a softer fill, 6689. Within 6689, we found a loose, dark, somewhat circular area, abutting the Western limit of cut 6691. We are excavating this ash pit or temporary hearth as context 6690. The soil is extremely soft and very dark in color, with lots of charcoal lenses and broken tile fragments. We water sieved part of the soil (ca. 50%, about 4 L.) and found a few fish scales, some fish bones, a few seeds, and a partial bead. We dry sieved the remaining soil.
The pit/deposit has relatively well-defined boundaries or edges to the West and East, but the North and South edges have been cut by pit 5629 and wall 5678, respectively. Underneath context 6690, the soil returns to the fill that characterizes context 6689. Context 6690, therefore, is probably a small pit for dumped ash or part of a temporary hearth.
